Main Analysis: The Binance Hack Aftermath
Binance said an October 29 security breach affected approximately $6.3 billion in client assets. Its initial investigation suggested a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop may have enabled access to a service container and unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The exchange said it had found no evidence of a wallet private-key leak; the technical cause remains under investigation. Binance's co-CEO subsequently described the process as more complex than the misuse of a single engineer's permissions. Reuters reported that the FBI attributed the attack to North Korea. Binance pledged to cover all user losses using SAFU and company funds. Around $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen on-chain in its October 30 update, and the exchange later said it had covered roughly 95% of the impacted amount.

Withdrawals resumed in phases on Sunday, November 1. Binance initially reported $3.64 billion in net outflows between 06:00 and 15:30 UTC that day. Reuters reported on November 2 that cumulative net withdrawals had reached $4.72 billion since reopening, citing a Binance spokesperson. These are different reporting windows, not conflicting estimates. Withdrawals remained partially suspended for some assets and networks.
