  • Ross Ulbricht, creator of Silk Road, has been granted a full pardon.
  • Ulbricht was serving two life sentences without parole.
  • Trump had promised to address Ulbricht’s sentence during his campaign.

The Pardon Announcement

President Donald Trump has granted a “full and unconditional” pardon to Ross Ulbricht, the man behind the infamous dark web marketplace, Silk Road. This act of clemency was announced on January 21, 2025, fulfilling a promise Trump made to the Libertarian community during his 2024 campaign. Ulbricht, who had been sentenced to life in prison without parole, was released from federal custody, marking a significant moment in the narrative of cryptocurrency and libertarian advocacy.

The Silk Road Legacy

Silk Road was more than just a platform for illicit drug sales; it was a pioneering venture in the world of decentralized finance and cryptocurrency. Launched in 2011, it used Bitcoin as its currency, highlighting the potential of digital currencies when they were still in their infancy.

Ulbricht’s site facilitated over $200 million in transactions, showcasing the power of anonymity and encrypted networks. Boasted nearly a million registered users worldwide and it generated commissions amounting to approximately $18 million for Ulbricht.

Political and Legal Implications

Trump’s decision to pardon Ulbricht has been seen as a nod to the Libertarian movement and the crypto community, both of which have been vocal about the harshness of Ulbricht’s sentence.

  • Libertarian Support: “Ross Ulbricht has been a libertarian political prisoner for more than a decade. I’m proud to say that saving his life has been one of our top priorities and that has finally paid off,” stated Angela McArdle, chair of the Libertarian National Committee.
  • Criticism: Critics argue that this move could undermine efforts to combat drug trafficking and money laundering through dark web channels.
