  • Gemini Titan, an affiliate of Gemini, has been granted a Designated Contract Market license by the CFTC.
  • The approval allows Gemini to provide prediction markets to US users, with initial access via web and later on mobile.
  • Gemini’s stock surged nearly 14% in after-hours trading following the announcement.

Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, has secured approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate as a designated contract market. This license enables the platform to launch prediction markets for its US customers.

The application process began in March 2020, culminating in a five-year journey to obtain the necessary regulatory clearance.

Market Impact: Following the announcement, Gemini’s shares jumped approximately 14% in extended trading, reflecting investor optimism about the new product line.

In a statement on X, Gemini announced: “We’ve just received a Designated Contract Market (DCM) license from the @CFTC which will allow Gemini to begin offering prediction markets to U.S. customers.”

Tyler Winklevoss, CEO of Gemini, commented, “Today’s approval marks the culmination of a 5-year licensing process and the beginning of a new chapter for Gemini,” attributing the progress to the Trump administration’s stance on crypto regulation.

Cameron Winklevoss, President, added, “Prediction markets have the potential to be as big or bigger than traditional capital markets.”

This move positions Gemini alongside competitors like Kalshi and Polymarket in the growing prediction markets sector, which has seen increased regulatory acceptance. Prediction markets allow users to bet on outcomes of various events, providing insights superior to traditional polls due to financial stakes involved.

Looking ahead, Gemini plans to expand its derivatives offerings to include crypto futures, options, and perpetual contracts for US users.

While this approval is a boost for Gemini amid post-IPO challenges, with shares down over 50% from their debut price, it underscores the evolving regulatory landscape for crypto in the US.
