Crypto Markets Lick Wounds After Record Binance Hack as BTC Holds Near $78K

| CryptoPress |

Bitcoin is trading near $78,000 as the cryptocurrency market absorbs the aftermath of the largest reported crypto exchange hack. A CoinMarketCap-based snapshot published by Pintu put total crypto market capitalization at $2.63 trillion at 04:56 UTC on November 2. Bitcoin recovered from an intraday low near $76,190 on October 30 but remains below its pre-hack levels.

Main Analysis: The Binance Hack Aftermath

Binance said an October 29 security breach affected approximately $6.3 billion in client assets. Its initial investigation suggested a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop may have enabled access to a service container and unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The exchange said it had found no evidence of a wallet private-key leak; the technical cause remains under investigation. Binance's co-CEO subsequently described the process as more complex than the misuse of a single engineer's permissions. Reuters reported that the FBI attributed the attack to North Korea. Binance pledged to cover all user losses using SAFU and company funds. Around $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen on-chain in its October 30 update, and the exchange later said it had covered roughly 95% of the impacted amount.

Withdrawals resumed in phases on Sunday, November 1. Binance initially reported $3.64 billion in net outflows between 06:00 and 15:30 UTC that day. Reuters reported on November 2 that cumulative net withdrawals had reached $4.72 billion since reopening, citing a Binance spokesperson. These are different reporting windows, not conflicting estimates. Withdrawals remained partially suspended for some assets and networks.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $202.59 million in the week ending October 30, including $643.33 million in net outflows on Friday. October finished with approximately $515 million in net outflows, ending three consecutive positive months. Spot Ether ETFs lost $431.53 million over the week, their fifth consecutive weekly decline. Bitcoin.com reported that Bitcoin ended October down 7.32%, its weakest October since 2014. Pintu's November 2 snapshot put CoinMarketCap's Fear & Greed Index at 37 (Fear).

ETF flows, the progress of Binance's withdrawal reopening and upcoming macroeconomic events remain useful measures of market conditions. The data do not establish a reliable buying zone or guarantee a rebound; high-volatility assets can continue to fall.
