Ethereum Builder Consensys Fortifies MetaMask Security with Wallet Guard Acquisition

On July 3, 2024, Consensys, the Ethereum-focused software developer and creator of the popular MetaMask wallet, announced a significant move to bolster its security measures. The company has acquired Wallet Guard, a leading cryptocurrency security firm known for its browser extension that detects scams and wallet drainers in real-time. This strategic acquisition aims to enhance the security features of MetaMask, the world’s leading self-custodial crypto wallet.

The Strategic Move: Integrating Wallet Guard’s Expertise

The entire Wallet Guard team will join Consensys within the MetaMask Product Safety Team. This integration is expected to leverage Wallet Guard’s best-in-class security engine and talented team to build multiple layers of protection that make it harder for scammers and hackers to target MetaMask users. By integrating Wallet Guard’s capabilities, Consensys aims to prevent hacks and scams before they occur, ensuring a safer and more secure experience for millions of MetaMask users worldwide.

Addressing the Web3 Security Landscape

The acquisition of Wallet Guard marks a significant advancement for Consensys in its commitment to safeguarding users against ever-evolving threats in the web3 ecosystem. As the blockchain-based Web3 world of decentralized applications continues to grow, the need for robust security measures becomes paramount. Consensys’s proactive approach to security is evident in its ongoing collaborations with web3 security partners and the integration of Blockaid security alerts into MetaMask last year.

Consensys’s Acquisition Trail

Consensys has been active in the acquisition trail, consolidating and strengthening its position in the web3 and blockchain industry. In 2023, the company acquired blockchain microstructure designer Special Mechanisms Group (SMG) and blockchain notifications service HAL. In 2022, Consensys acquired wallet firm MyCrypto. These acquisitions demonstrate Consensys’s commitment to building a robust ecosystem that welcomes the next generation of users.

The MetaMask Platform and Beyond

Through its product suite, including the MetaMask platform, Infura, Linea, Diligence, and its NFT toolkit Phosphor, Consensys has become the trusted collaborator for users, creators, and developers on their path to build and belong in the world they want to see. With the acquisition of Wallet Guard, Consensys is taking a significant step towards ensuring the utmost protection for its users in the web3 ecosystem.
