In Brief:

  • Polygon has released its Layer 2 blockchain built with zero-knowledge technology, becoming the second company in four days to make a so-called ‘zkEVM’ available to the general public.
  • The first Ethereum-compatible zk-rollups to hit the market will not preserve user privacy or obfuscate their transaction history.
  • ZkSync Era was released Friday in alpha, the software development stage before beta.
  • The race to launch the first Ethereum-compatible, zero-knowledge rollup has been contentious, with rival teams sniping at each other on social media over the past several months.
  • Polygon PoS chain still has very low fees and can have higher throughput than any rollup, including the zkEVM rollup.

Polygon has released its Layer 2 blockchain built with zero-knowledge technology, becoming the second company in four days to make a so-called “zkEVM” available to the general public. The first zk-rollups that can be used with Ethereum will not protect users’ privacy or hide their transaction history. ZkSync Era was released Friday in alpha, the software development stage before beta. The race to launch the first Ethereum-compatible, zero-knowledge rollup has been contentious, with rival teams sniping at each other on social media over the past several months.

What is Polygon’s Zero-Knowledge Rollup zkEVM?

Polygon’s Zero-Knowledge Rollup zkEVM is a scaling solution that uses zero-knowledge proofs to bundle multiple transactions into a single transaction. As a result, there are fewer transactions for the network to process, which means that fewer transactions require fewer gas resources. This makes transactions faster and cheaper.

Why is this important?

The release of Polygon’s zkEVM will improve scalability and reduce gas costs. This will make it easier for developers to build decentralized applications (dApps) on the Ethereum network. It will also make it easier for users to interact with these dApps by reducing transaction fees.

ZkSync Era vs Polygon’s Zero-Knowledge Rollup zkEVM

ZkSync Era was released Friday in alpha, the software development stage before beta. It is one of the first Ethereum-compatible zk-rollups to hit the market. However, it will not preserve user privacy or obfuscate their transaction history. Polygon’s Zero-Knowledge Rollup zkEVM is also an Ethereum-compatible zk-rollup scaling solution equivalent to the Ethereum Virtual Machine that uses zero-knowledge proofs to bundle multiple transactions into a single transaction.

The Race To Launch The First Ethereum-Compatible Zero-Knowledge Rollup

The race to launch the first Ethereum-compatible, zero-knowledge rollup has been contentious, with rival teams sniping at each other on social media over the past several months. However, the Polygon PoS chain still has very low fees and can have a higher throughput than any rollup, including the zkEVM rollup.
